Photo a Day Jan. 23, 2009

I took photos yesterday, then forgot to upload them here. Mea Culpa...I've alwasy wanted to say that! Anyway I felt very lucky to catch this woodpecker who has been visiting the feeder everyday for about a week now. Just the feeder pole, however, not the feeder pan itself. There must be insects in there for him. He usually comes and goes so quickly I miss him, but he stuck around yesterday for his portrait. You'd think he was a red-headed woodpecker, but he's actually designated a red-bellied woodpecker in my book. The red-heads don't have stripes on their backs.

Isn't he a handsome fellow? What a great variety of birds you are getting into your yard this winter. I am enjoying these as I miss our feeders and the birds we got to watch in IL.

Great captures on the woodpecker. I have only seen a few in my yard and have never been able to get their photos!

those bird books.... sometimes don'tch wonder what they were looking at.... there is no red on his tummy at all.. it's all on his head....nope..I'd be calling him a red headed guy myself... lol...

What a great photo, Mary! Weird about the name 'cos there doesn't appear to even be a speck of red on his belly....I'd be calling him a red-head too. :)

Well, actually, the head and neck of the "red-headed" woodpecker is completely red, front and back, as opposed to this fellow whose head just has a strip of red down the back. Whatever he's called I love to see him the neighborhood.

You did a great job of catching him. He is beautiful and these woodpeckers never hang around too long do they.

Nice shot!
We see them often during the summer time and they always were waking up Alan at the morning :)

I really like the lines and colour in the top photo. Would make a nice simple painting :)

Awesome timing Mary! We have a woodpecker who summers here, but every time I see him, by the time I get my camera he has gone. Wonderful portrait of a cool species.
